Terms of use
Updated October 30, 2026. These terms are between you and TrailRecon LLC. By using the TrailRecon Field Guide app or this website, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use them.
What the Field Guide is
The Field Guide is narrated background and storytelling about off-road regions: the land, wildlife, history, trails and towns. It is not a navigation app, a route plan, a trail-difficulty rating or safety training. It doesn’t tell you where you are on a trail or whether a road is open.
Your trip is your responsibility
- Off-road travel is risky. Roads wash out, weather turns, and vehicles break. You decide where to go and what you and your vehicle can handle.
- Check current conditions, closures, permits and fire restrictions with the managing agency before you go. Stay on legal routes and follow all laws and land-use rules.
- Don’t handle your phone while driving. Start audio before you roll, let a passenger run it, or use drive mode only where it’s legal and safe to do so.
- Respect private property, cultural sites and wildlife. Don’t disturb rock art, artifacts or historic sites.
Accuracy
We research every chapter and check facts against official and published sources, but places change and mistakes happen. The audio and text are provided “as is,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, completeness or fitness for a particular purpose. If you hear something wrong, use Send feedback in the app and we’ll look at it.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, TrailRecon and its owners, contributors and partners are not liable for any injury, loss, damage, citation or cost arising from your travel, your use of the Field Guide, or your reliance on anything in it. Where the law doesn’t allow a full exclusion, our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for the Field Guide, if anything.
Who owns what
- The scripts, narration, recordings, app design and the TrailRecon name and logos belong to TrailRecon. TrailRecon is a registered trademark.
- You may listen for your own personal, non-commercial use. Please don’t copy, re-upload, rebroadcast, sell or share the audio or scripts, scrape the app or site, or use any of it to train AI models.
- Region photos come from public agencies and photographers under their own licenses, credited in the app. Those credits and licenses still apply.
AI voice
Written and researched by Brad Kowitz. Narrated by a digital recreation of his voice. Don’t use the recordings to imitate his voice.
Other services
The Trails tab links to onX Offroad, which is a separate company with its own terms. TrailRecon isn’t responsible for third-party services. Some links may be affiliate links, and TrailRecon may earn a commission.
Purchases and subscriptions
- In the App Store and Google Play versions, some regions and guides are paid. Every full region’s Welcome chapter is free to try.
- Purchases are made through Apple or Google and are covered by their terms and refund policies. App Store purchases are also covered by Apple’s standard license agreement.
- A one-time purchase is yours to keep. It stays tied to your Apple or Google account, even if we stop selling that region, and Restore purchases in Settings brings it back on a new phone.
- A subscription renews automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. You’re charged through your Apple or Google account, and you can manage or cancel it in your account settings. Prices are shown in the store before you buy.
Feedback
If you send feedback, you let us use it to fix and improve the Field Guide, without owing you anything for it. See the privacy page for what we store.
Changes
The web test version is free. We may change or remove regions and features, end the web test, or change prices in the store going forward. We may update these terms; the date at the top shows the latest version, and continuing to use the Field Guide means you accept the update.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules.
